Ben A. Plewes was a Virginia author, local historian, and researcher best known for documenting the stories of military veterans and preserving the history of the Suffolk area. His work focused on collecting first-hand accounts, photographs, and historical records to ensure that local history is not lost to future generations.
Among his best-known works are Suffolk Went to War and Suffolk’s Call to Arms, books that chronicle the experiences of Suffolk-area veterans during World War II. For these projects, Plewes interviewed numerous veterans and recorded their wartime experiences, travels, and service histories. Copies of these works are available through local libraries and his author website.
In addition to his historical writing, Plewes has authored other books and his son Matt maintains an author website featuring his publications.

Plewes tracked down dozens of World War II veterans who hailed from Suffolk and told of their travels, experiences and battles in the war.
The books, “Suffolk Went to War and Suffolk’s Call to Arms,” are also available on the shelves of the Morgan Memorial Library in Suffolk ,Virginia.
